Health official urging folks to know signs, risk factors for diabetes

Diabetes Alert Day is Tuesday of next week and local health officials are hoping folks will use the reminder as a time to assess their own risk factors and potential symptoms.

Kelly Dawes is the certified diabetes educator for the Pennyrile District Health Department and says they’re seeing younger people showing signs of early onset of Type 2 diabetes, with obesity and a family history of the disease among the largest risk factors.

A blood test is the best way to determine if you are diabetic, but Dawes says there are common symptoms to be on the lookout for.

Dawes teaches classes for people living with diabetes or pre-diabetes each month and you can sign up by calling her at 270-522-8121.
