Attempted murder, pursuit case heads to the grand jury

A preliminary hearing was held in Christian District Court Monday for Joshua Smith, the man facing several charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, following a pursuit on March 3.

In addition to attempted murder of a police officer, Smith charged with fleeing or evading police, wanton endangerment, felony receiving stolen property, reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and several other counts. Deputy Kevin Quarles says he was in pursuit of Smith when he saw him swerve erratically and later learned that he had tried to run over Lt. Scott Smith, who was outside of his vehicle.

Deputy Quarles says he was wearing his body camera, but due its placement and no dash camera in the vehicle, he was not able to capture that specific moment. Spikes strips were placed and Joshua Smith would wreck out near the southern intersection with Madisonville Road and flee on foot, but was soon caught and arrested.

Judge Foster Cotthoff determined there was probable cause and sent the case onto the grand jury for consideration of indictment.
