Mayor gives update on storm cleanup, downtown demolition

Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight appeared on WHOP Friday morning and gave an update on cleanup from last Friday’s severe weather and on demolition to two downtown buildings.

He says it’s likely to be about a week and a half or so before Solid Waste is able to catch up on collecting limbs and other debris from the side of city streets.

Mayor Knight and Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam recently signed a state of emergency declaration that could allow government agencies and essential private non-profit agencies such as utilities to be reimbursed for costs and damages related to the storms and historic wind.

Regarding the demolition of two buildings that were deemed structurally unsound on South Main Street, Mayor Knight says there should be a mostly clear lot where Lee’s Pool Hall, Wood’s Pharmacy and the Main Street Café once stood within a week’s time.
