Cats Sweep Series in Walk-Off Fashion
Jase Felker saw the winning run 180 feet away and figured why wait around? The Princeton, Kentucky native laced a line drive to the gap on the first pitch he saw for a two-out, RBI single that scored Ryan Waldschmidt from second and secured a three-game sweep of Indiana State with a 7-6 victory in front of 2,128 fans at Kentucky Proud Park on Sunday. The Wildcats (9-2) erased deficits of both 3-0 and 6-4, tying the game on Hunter Gilliam’s solo home run in the eighth inning before Felker’s winner in the ninth, the 14th time UK has scored a walk-off win during Coach Nick Mingione’s tenure. Ryan Hagenow pitched two scoreless innings to get the win. The Cats used a big inning early to claim a 4-2 victory in game one and then rebuffed a Sycamores’ rally late in game two for a 5-4 triumph. The Cats now have won five straight contests.
Coffel’s Grand Slam Sends No. 14 Kentucky Past UIC, 14-0 in Five
The No. 14 Kentucky Softball team earned a 7-1 win over UIC and fell 7-1 to the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon as day two of the 2023 Oklahoma Tournament wrapped up at Marita Hynes Field in Norman. Junior shortstop Erin Coffel delivered a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning as part of a six-run frame which aided an 11-run effort from the No. 14 Kentucky offense as UK downed UIC 11-0 in five Sunday to conclude the 2023 Oklahoma Tournament in Norman. UK of course fell in five on Friday to Oklahoma 18-0.
Cards Have Mixed Results at Classic
University of Louisville lost 11-1 to No. 22/22 Northwestern and followed with a 2-0 win over Northern Kentucky Sunday at Ulmer Stadium on the final day of the Cardinal Classic. The University of Louisville softball team defeated Toledo 8-4 and fell 4-1 to No. 22/22 Northwestern on day two of the Cardinal Classic Saturday at Ulmer Stadium. Way back on Thursday they defeated Northern Kentucky 7-0.
Cards Run-Rule Michigan, Complete Texas Sweep
The fourth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team needed just seven innings for a 10-0 victory over Michigan on Sunday at the 2023 Shriners Children’s College Classic at Minute Maid Park. Louisville (10-1) finished off a perfect weekend in the Lone Star State and was crowned champions of the annual event. Carson Liggett (3-0) worked seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit in the complete-game effort. It was the first complete game by a Louisville pitcher since Brendan McKay shutout Ole Miss in Oxford on Feb. 27, 2016. Louisville starting pitchers combined to allow just one run over 20 innings of work against No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 10 TCU and Michigan. The fourth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team earned its second straight ranked win on Saturday, defeating No. 10 TCU 3-2 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, and defeated Texas A&M Friday 14-5.
Hilltoppers Fall Twice in Sunday Doubleheader
WKU Baseball dropped back-to-back games, 18-10 and 6-5 (10), in its Sunday doubleheader against the Northern Illinois Huskies at Nick Denes Field. With the Huskies evening the series, they improve to 3-8, while the Hilltoppers drop to 9-4. WKU Baseball swept its doubleheader against the Northern Illinois Huskies on Saturday at Nick Denes Field. Heavy Offense Drives WKU to a 2-0 Sunday
In a perfect 4-0 weekend for the Hilltoppers, WKU got the bats moving on Sunday as they swept both their Sunday games at the WKU Softball Complex. To end the 2023 Hilltopper Spring Fling, the Tops marked their fifth complete shutout, 5-0, against Akron before taking care of Austin Peay, 8-1.In the Hilltoppers’ match with Akron, Kaytlan Kemp pulls in WKU’s second triple of the season, while first baseman Jessica Bush records the first home run of her career: a two-run shot over the left field wall. Against the Governors in the later afternoon game – even with a Kelsie Houchens start in the circle – freshman Maddy Wood made her mark on the field in six innings with allowing only two hits, no runs on 21 batters faced and earning her first collegiate win. WKU Softball swept Saturday’s games and have won their last 12 of 14 for head coach Amy Tudor’s 500th career win after the Tops 9-0 win over Evansville at the WKU Softball Complex. Earlier in the day, the Hilltoppers took care of Akron, 3-2, with freshman Luna Curran earning her first career save in the circle.
Racers Fall To Bulldogs In Extras Sunday
The Murray State softball team wrapped up play at the 2023 Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament Sunday with a 5-3, extra inning loss to host Mississippi State at Nusz Park in Starkville, Mississippi. The Racers went 4-1 over the weekend in Starkville including a win over the Bulldogs Saturday. The Murray State softball team won twice Saturday at the 2023 Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Nusz Park in Starkville including the first win over an SEC program since 2012. The Racers opened the day with a 2-1 win over Dartmouth, followed by a 4-1 over host Mississippi State. The Murray State softball team picked up two wins on the first day of the 2023 Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament Friday by beating Dartmouth, 7-2, in the opener, followed by a 6-1 win over Abilene Christian in the nightcap.
Huge Seventh Inning Fuels Racers to Series Win
Murray State baseball picked up a 10-5 win over Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at Johnny Reagan Field to secure their first series win of the season. An offensive explosion in the seventh inning of the matchup with five runs on six hits in the frame ensured the victory. Outfielder Dustin Mercer and second baseman Logan Bland each led the MSU offense with three hits apiece. Murray State baseball took game one of Saturday’s doubleheader 8-5 before falling 13-10 in game two at Johnny Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky. The win in game one was Head Coach Dan Skirka’s 100th win at the helm for the Racers.
Govs strike first but can’t hold off No. 12 Cowboys in series finale
Shortstop Jaden Brown hit a two-run home run as Austin Peay State University struck for four runs in the first inning but No. 12 Oklahoma State scored in each of its first seven innings, with the Govs falling 12-4 in Sunday’s series finale at O’Brate Stadium. The Govs fell 2-1 Saturday after getting blown out Friday 19-2.
Govs hold all the cards versus Aces, take second place at Spring Fling
Austin Peay State University’s softball team recorded its first run-rule victory of the season, Sunday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex, as the Governors defeated Evansville, 9-1, after dropping the opening game of the day to tournament host Western Kentucky, by an 8-1 final. The Govs finish the Hilltopper Spring Fling Tournament with a 3-1 record and improve their overall record on the season to 6-7. Saturday they picked up wins over Akron and Evansville, 7-1 and 2-1 respectively.
