(Mesa, AZ) — A power-bat is making waves at Cubs spring training. Edwin Rios took live batting practice yesterday and crushed a deep homer off Drew Smyly. The third baseman was signed to a one-year deal heading into the weekend and is expected to at least compete for a bench role. Cubs’ manager David Ross spoke to the media from Mesa and said, “We’re excited to get Edwin. Real left-handed power bat.” The Cubs square off against the Giants in their first spring training game on Saturday.

(Goodyear, AZ) — A star player on the Reds is commenting on his future with the team. Joey Votto spoke to the media yesterday and was asked if he’s feeling sentimental about going into the final year of his contract with the organization. The first baseman said, “Perhaps I should but I don’t. I think it’s hard to be nostalgic when you’re focused on performing.” The 39-year-old is coming off shoulder surgery which limited him to 91 games last season. Votto said he’s feeling good heading into his 17th big league season. The Reds and Guardians square off in the first spring training game of the season on Saturday.

(Cooperstown, NY) — Cardinals fans will have a little extra to cheer about later this summer. Nearly one month since being elected, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced for St. Louis third baseman Scott Rolen will enter the Hall of Fame with a Cardinals cap on his plaque. Rolen spent the first seven years of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies before joining the Cardinals. During his time in St. Louis he won three Gold Glove Awards and the 2006 World Series.
