Hopkinsville City Council approved an agreement for emergency demolition services for two buildings on South Main Street at a special-called meeting Thursday evening.
The buildings, which include the addresses of 806, 808, 810 and 812 South Main Street, were recently inspected by a structural engineer and then deemed a hazard that required immediate action to address by the Fire Chief and Fire Marshall.
Fire Chief Steve Futrell says he considers the conditions of the buildings to be a danger, as people are still entering those buildings despite their conditions—and there’s no repairing them.
City Attorney Doug Willen says it will cost about $388,110 to demolish those buildings and council declaring the situation an emergency will allow them to take action quickly.
Council members voted unanimously to ratify the mayor’s emergency declaration and the agreement with East Construction, LLC for both demolition and removal services.
Those buildings at one point housed Lee’s Pool Hall, Woods Pharmacy and the Main Street Café.
