Bentzel discusses Monday incident at HHS, says board likely to purchase weapons-detecting equipment

Christian County School System Superintendent Chris Bentzel discussed a student bringing a gun to Hopkinsville High School Monday during a Tuesday morning appearance on WHOP and says they hope to soon have weapons-detecting machinery in place at both high schools.

Bentzel says the male juvenile who allegedly attempted to run away and tossed a gun onto the school roof after being pulled out of class, will now go through the expulsion process.

He says the top priority for the school system and police during the immediacy of situations like that is to be sure all students are safe.

Bentzel thanked the student who told a coach about the gun, who then notified the SRO and administration.

He says plans have been in place for several months to bring the weapons-detecting equipment to both high schools and Bluegrass Academy and the school board will consider purchasing the equipment at its regular February meeting.

Hopkinsville police charged the juvenile from Monday’s incident with possession of a handgun by a minor, receiving stolen property, possession of a handgun on school property, tampering with evidence, fleeing or evading police and first-degree terroristic threatening.
