Community mourns loss of Carolyn “Ms. Pickle” Haddock

The community is in mourning, as longtime educator and community literacy advocate Carolyn Haddock passed away Sunday evening at the age of 75.

Even after she retired from education, Haddock had a hand in inspiring early literacy throughout the community, including traveling to local schools as “Ms. Pickle”—bringing treats and pickles and a fun for learning with her. Speaking to WHOP about the program in 2018, Haddock said that apart from literacy, it also taught children how to handle their emotions and recognize that although there will be bad days, there are also good ones.

She was an elementary teacher for 12 years and worked in elementary counseling for 18 years.

Haddock also had a big part to play in the local Rotary Club, helping out with auctions and other functions. Many people remember the positive light she brought to her life and those around her, whether that be with a smile, or a heartfelt birthday wish on social media.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Thursday at First Christian Church, with burial to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church Thursday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. with Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
