School board moves forward to fill District 4 vacancy, accepts Walker’s resignation

The Christian County School Board will move forward with finding a new representative for District 4, following a special-called virtual meeting Monday afternoon.

First, the board had to vote to approve the recent resignation of board member Michael Walker, with Superintendent Chris Bentzel detailing that it would allow them to move forward in the process of finding a member to step into that position.

The board voted to accept Walker’s resignation, with board member Lindsey Clark the lone ‘no’ vote.  Board attorney Jack Lackey explained the process for the replacement process, saying the board has 60 days to appoint a member, or it goes to the Commissioner of the Department of Education.

The board will have a chance to review all the applicants, and could set up interviews with those who are interested in serving, and then it would come to board sometime in January to make a decision.  If they fail to choose a replacement, whether through being unable to come to an agreement or having no applicants, it goes to the Department of Education to fill. The board voted unanimously to authorize the Superintendent to post a notice of vacancy in accordance with the KRS.

Per Board policy, the vacancy will be advertised for two weeks. Interested applicants can complete the application and submit a letter of intent to the Board of Education affirming they meet all eligibility requirements to fill the vacancy, which included having a high school diploma or GED and they must live in the District 4 area.

Walker told WHOP News the decision to resign was a personal one and he felt it was time to step away from the position, and he continues to keep the school system’s best interest at heart.
