Mitchell retiring from Todd County Road Department, Stokes to replace him

Todd County Road Department Superintendent Eddie Mitchell is retiring and fiscal court has chosen his successor.

Mitchell has been at the road department for 16 years, including the last 13 as superintendent. He says there have been many improvements during that time, including equipment upgrades and purchases.

The department is known for its hard and persistent work to clear snow and ice off roads during the winter and Mitchell says he and his guys have worked very long shifts to get the job done over the years.

He says none of the department’s progress could have been possible without his employees.

He recommended Scott Stokes, who has been employed at the road department for 14 years, to take his place and that was approved unanimously by fiscal court at a special-called meeting Wednesday. Judge-Executive Todd Mansfield says on behalf of himself and the court, he thanks Mitchell for his hard work and devotion to the job and says he’ll be missed.

In other action, magistrates approved a memorandum of understanding with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to contribute its $300,000 toward a $16 million project to replace four bridges on US 79 in Todd and Logan counties, with Judge-Executive Mansfield saying work has already begun in some of those areas.

Officials are hopeful the wider bridges will make traveling safer on the highway that serves as a major outlet for semis going from Logan Aluminum and Novelis to I-24 in Clarksville. The work should be complete by the end of next year.
