Former Congressman Carroll Hubbard dies at 85

Former Western Kentucky Congressman Carroll Hubard died Sunday at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Paducah at the age of 85.

He was elected to represent Kentucky’s First District in the U.S. Congress in November 1974 and served until he was defeated in the 1992 Democratic primary by Tom Barlow.

Hubbard went to federal prison from 1995 to 1997 after pleading guilty to federal campaign funding violations.

He also served in the state Senate prior to serving in Congress and ran an unsuccessful campaign in 1979 for governor.

Hubbard talked about that campaign and his love for Kentucky during a 1979 interview with the late WHOP News Director Jim Love.

The nation was facing many of the same issues then as it is now—inflation and rising costs of energy—and Hubbard expressed his support of coal in Western Kentucky.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Byrn Funeral Home in Mayfield.
