Probation denied for Oak Grove man in sexual abuse case

An Oak Grove man convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in March of 2019 was denied probation Wednesday morning in Christian Circuit Court.

Public Defender Eric Bearden argued that 30-year old Juan Gonzalez was under the influence of alcohol on the night of the crime and not in his right mind and that he’s taken steps to address his problems since then.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling acknowledged alcohol was a major factor in the assault, but said the victim wants Gonzalez to go to prison.

Judge John Atkins denied probation, sentencing Gonzalez to five years in prison for the first-degree sexual abuse charge.

He will also be required to sign up for the sex offender registry when the time comes for his release.

The original arrest citation from Oak Grove police says the female victim in the case had to be treated for serious injuries at Jennie Stuart Medical Center and Gonzalez was found at the time of his arrest throwing up in a shower with blood on his body.
