2020 shooting suspect wants new attorney as he considers plea deal

The Cadiz man accused of shooting Darrell Bateman on East Second Street in Hopkinsville in February of 2020 wants a new lawyer while his current attorney says he should accept a plea deal that’s been proposed by the Commonwealth.

Travis Mayes is currently represented by public defender Doug Moore and Moore says the deal currently proposed by Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling would make him already parole eligible.

Mayes described a strained relationship between himself and Moore, though Moore argued he’s responded to all of Mayes’ emails and calls. Moore says Mayes wants his case dismissed because Bateman has failed to show for three previously scheduled trials, noting Judge John Atkins has already ruled against requests to that regard.

Mayes believes his relationship with Moore is damaged beyond repair and doesn’t believe that taking a plea for the shooting wouldn’t affect his parole eligibility.

Judge Atkins would not remove Moore from representing Mayes, but did arrange for someone from Probation and Parole to visit Mayes at the jail and go over with him how the potential plea deal could affect his parole eligibility.

Trial for the first-degree assault charge is currently scheduled for July 7.
