March is Women’s History Month and there are events and activities planned to celebrate that and the life of one of Hopkinsville’s most famous natives, bell hooks, throughout the month.
Appearing on WHOP Tuesday morning, Museums of Historic Hopkinsville Director Alissa Keller and Human Rights Commission Executive Director Idalia Luna spoke about the themes of the month and the amazing life of Gloria Jean Watkins, better known as bell hooks. Keller says things kicked off Tuesday with two proclamation signings, one celebrating Women’s History Month and the other declaring it Gloria Jean Watkins Day.
Luna says theme this year’s theme is “Woman Providing Healing and Providing Hope”, celebrating women who aid in the healing of those around them.
She says nominations are open now for the Woman of the Year Award, and they are accepting applications for the Women Educating Women Scholarship.
The community is encouraged to nominate a woman or group of women in the area who positively impacts the community. Nomination forms and details on the award are available on the Human Rights Commission website. The deadline to nominate someone or apply for a scholarship is March 10.
