Freezing rain has persisted across western Kentucky from the overnight into the morning hours and many school systems are closed or delayed today due to icy conditions.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. for Christian, Todd, Trigg and Muhlenberg counties and a Winter Storm Warning until 6 p.m. for areas to the north and west.
Christian County Public Schools are operating on a two-hour delay, while Todd, Trigg, Caldwell and Hopkins County Schools are all closed—with many districts utilizing non-traditional instruction. Dawson Springs Independent Schools are closed and Madisonville Community College will open at 9:30.
Bridges and overpasses are reported to be slick across the region, with accidents reported on the Pennyrile Parkway at the Eagle Way Bypass and on US 68 in Elkton at the bridge between Pond River Road and the traffic light.
An accident that’s being called “devastating” by the Marshall County Rescue Squad happened overnight on the Tennessee River Bridge at the 30 mile-marker of I-24 West. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says it involves 11 vehicles, including eight tractor-trailers, and Kentucky State Police has reconstructed the crash as part of the investigation. One eastbound lane is open and moving slowly, but westbound traffic remains closed at the Tennessee River bridge and could be closed until about 10:30 this morning.
Pennyrile Electric has only three small outages reported, affecting 64 members, with the largest outage in northern Logan County.
Temperatures are expected to gradually rise above freezing today and change the precipitation over to all rain and begin the melting process for the ice we have now.
