MORNING SPORTS BRIEFS 2.16.22

NBA

No Ja, no problem for the Memphis Grizzlies who defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 121-109 in the Big Easy. Ja Morant sat out last night with an ankle issue. The Grizzlies welcome the Portland Trail Blazers this evening.

NHL
Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the third period in the Washingtoj Capitals’ 4-1 win over the Predators in Nashville. Michael McCarron put Nashville on the board in the third. Nashville plays the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh on Friday night.

MLB

Major League Baseball’s lockout is officially affecting Spring Training. Pitchers and catchers were scheduled to report Tuesday, but didn’t due to the lack of progress made in recent negotiations. Commissioner Rob Manfred addressed the media last week and said it was still his plan for the season to start on time.

NFL

The Minnesota Vikings will officially have their new head coach by the end of the week. ESPN reports that the team is expected to sign Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell to become the team’s next head coach tomorrow. As we reported earlier this week, O’ Connell’s departure from the Super Bowl champion LA Rams could lead to UK offensive coordinator Liam Coen returning to the team in that position.
