MORNING SPORTS BRIEFS 2/15/22

College Football

It doesn’t look like Luke Fickell will enter the college football coaching carousel anytime soon. ESPN is reporting the Cincinnati Bearcats have agreed to sign the head coach to a new contract through 2028 that will pay him 5-million dollars per year. Fickell led the Bearcats to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the College Football Playoff, which was the first playoff appearance for any team out of the Power Five.

NBA

Ja Morant is questionable for tonight’s Memphis Grizzlies game in New Orleans against the Pelicans due to an ankle injury. The Grizzlies have won five straight games.

NHL

The Nashville Predators host the Washington Capitals this evening with first puck dropping at 7 pm.

NFL

Odell Beckham Jr. might be missing a chunk of next season. NFL Network reports the receiver is believed to have torn his ACL in the Los Angeles Rams’ 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl 56. Beckham exited in the second quarter with a non-contact injury and did not return to the game. He did make a quick impact in his limited playing time, reeling in two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.

MLB

Major League Baseball is attempting to trim down its labor force in the minor leagues. ESPN reports that the league wants to reduce the size of the Domestic Reserve List, which currently allows clubs to have up to 180 players in their minor league systems.
MLB is trying to gradually decrease the number of players to below 150 throughout the next collective bargaining agreement. In December of 2020, the league got rid of 42 minor league teams when it restructured the farm system.
