Congressman Comer surveys damage in Pembroke, praises first responders, community response

Congressman James Comer made a visit to Pembroke Friday to survey local tornado damage, and he praised first responders and citizens for their fast, compassionate actions in the wake of destruction.

The congressman got an update on repair and cleanup efforts from Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nick Belair and other community members before viewing the worst of the damage. He says he was glad to see Christian, Logan and Lyon counties added to the federal major disaster declaration, saying it will start the process of rebuilding and getting aid to those in need.

Comer says if people need help navigating FEMA protocols or need help communicating with FEMA, they are free to contact his office for support.

He says that while all of the destruction has been hard to see, he’s been amazed by the response from the communities—from first responders to individuals to those from across county and state lines looking to help however they can.

Chief Belair bragged on the community support, saying numerous individuals stepped up immediately to do what need to be done, from helping get the streets cleared to checking on their neighbors, to cutting back trees that had fallen.
