Masking now optional in Todd County schools, required on buses

Students in Todd County Public Schools are no longer required to wear a mask in buildings as falling COVID case numbers there have allowed the district to make masking optional.

Todd County has been yellow on the COVID incidence rate map now for several days and district officials say the falling numbers combined with other factors has allowed them to lift the requirement on wearing masks in buildings.

Students will still be required to wear a mask on school buses.

Todd County Public Health Director Jen Harris says she supports the decision, but the health department and school system will both keep an eye on the numbers and the mandate could come back if conditions worsen, as masking has been an effective tool.

Pfizer vaccines were recently approved for children between the ages of 5 and 11 and Harris says parents can have their young one vaccinated at school by signing a consent form.

The Todd County Health Department is going exclusively with Pfizer vaccines now for all booster shots, as studies have shown them to be interchangeable, and Harris says you can walk into their facility on West Main Street in Elkton without an appointment and get a booster if it’s been six months since your second dose of Moderna or Pfizer or two months since your one dose of Johnson and Johnson.

She reminded that there are many other options in Todd and surrounding counties if you prefer not to receive Pfizer.
