Jefferson County deputy killed in ‘ambush’

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Shirley died Thursday morning after being shot while working off-duty at a car lot in Louisville’s south end.

Louisville Metro Police say Shirley was “targeted and ambushed.”  Police Chief Erika Shields says they have a couple of potential suspects in the shooting.

The 26-year-old Shirley was a two-year veteran of the sheriff’s department who worked in the court security division.

Sheriff John Aubrey says Deputy Shirley was working as a security guard at the lot when he was gunned down.

He recently was awarded a medal of valor for his actions in helping a shooting victim during last year’s protests in Louisville.
