The San Francisco Giants avoided a three game sweep with a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals open a weekend series at the Chicago Cubs tomorrow.
Chicago’s 11 game losing streak is over as Patrick Wisdom drove in a pair of runs as the Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3. The series concludes tonight at Wrigley Field.
Ronald Acuna Junior went deep as the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-3. Acuna had three hits and three runs scored to help Atlanta avoid the sweep. The Braves begin a series at the Miami Marlins tomorrow night.
The 2021 Home Run Derby field is now set with the additions of Joey Gallo and Juan Soto to the competition. This is the first Home Run Derby appearance for both players. Gallo has 23 dingers so far this season and Soto has hit ten bombs. The Home Run Derby will be on Monday night from Coors Field in Denver.
The New York Mets’ lone All-Star selection says he’s not going to Denver. Pitcher Jacob deGrom is opting out of the Midsummer Classic this year in order to rest and spend time with his family he said on Wednesday. The right-hander has battled a number of injuries during the first half of the season. He did lobby for his teammate, pitcher Taijuan Walker, to take his place. Walker is 7-and-3 with a 2.44 E-R-A on the season.
