Phil Mickelson has accepted a special exemption to play in this year’s U.S. Open. The exemption spares Mickelson of playing through a qualifying tournament. The former Masters champion isn’t ranked in the top 60 in the World Golf Rankings and didn’t qualify automatically. Mickelson has never won the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open will be played next month at Torrey Pines in Southern California.
