HCC receives $34k grant for summer bridge program

A $34,000 grant has been announced by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education to support a Summer Bridge program at Hopkinsville Community College.

A news release says the program is targeted to high school students who graduated in Spring 2020 or are graduating in Spring 2021.

According to HCC Chief Institutional Advancement Officer Yvette Eastham, the grant’s focus is on preparedness, academics, transition to college and assistance. The inaugural, no-fee program will begin on July 12 and run through August 6, Monday – Thursday, narrowing the gap between the bridge program and the start of fall classes on August 16.

Students will earn three transferable credit hours for completion of the accelerated Freshman Year Experience 105 and receive additional instruction in readiness for college from English faculty.

HCC President Dr. Alisa Young says, “HCC’s Pathfinders PATH program will help incoming students prepare for the rigors of college. Our faculty and staff have devised an intensive, immersive, four-week summer bridge program that will set HCC Pathfinders on a PATH of success for Fall 2021.”

Twenty students will be recruited from area high schools to participate in the program, which will feature peer mentors to assist students to navigate the coursework this summer and meet with students throughout the fall semester.
