Severe weather causes power outages, flash flooding in region

A round of severe thunderstorms knocked out power and caused flash flooding in the region early Tuesday morning.

A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. for northern Christian County and all of Muhlenberg County, with the National Weather Service saying law enforcement reported several roads are flooded in Greenville.

Crofton Elementary School is closed today due to a power outage.

Kentucky Utilities reports 733 customers out of power in Crofton and surrounding areas and lists 10 a.m. as the expected time of restoration.

Hopkins County Schools are closed and using virtual instruction today, Muhlenberg County schools are on a two-hour delay due to flooding and Stewart County, Tennessee Schools are on a two-hour delay due to power outages.

The Greenville Fire Department reported water in homes and multiple water rescues from vehicles in the early morning hours.

Pennyrile Electric has been reporting over 20 separate outages affecting over 2,000 members most of the morning and Brent Gilkey says crews are out working as quickly as they can.

He says the ones caused by lightning are easier to address than ones from downed trees and poles.

Todd County Emergency Management Director Daniel Smith says the largest power outage there was caused by a tree that knocked down power lines near Schlabach’s Bakery a couple miles north of Penchem on Guthrie Road.

There were no injuries reported in Western Kentucky, though a woman was killed in Weakley County, Tennessee when a tree fell onto her mobile home.
