Dossett says population won’t allow Christian County to be one House district

State Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says Christian County’s population would not allow for the General Assembly to make it one House district during legislative redistricting next year.

The local League of Women Voters has advocated for Christian County to be unified as one or no more than two districts, but Representative Dossett says population requirements would not allow Christian County to be a single district of its own.

One version of House redistricting approved in 2012 would have placed Representative Dossett’s mailbox in Pembroke in the 15th District that was represented at the time by Representative Brent Yonts of Greenville.

That map was deemed unconstitutional and Dossett says that experience helps make him committed to not gerrymandering district lines for political purposes.

Christian County has been split three ways for at least 20 years and Dossett believes it’s served the area well having more voices in Frankfort.

The League is also asking the General Assembly to act with transparency in the process, to actively pursue community input, and to allow the community to view the proposed district lines before passage.
