Local legislators discuss education measures

Local state legislators believe the 2021 session of the Kentucky General Assembly that concluded Tuesday night was successful—especially considering the unusual circumstances of having to pass a one-year budget during a pandemic.

State Senator Whitney Westerfield is pleased they were able to fund all-day kindergarten across Kentucky and hopes that funding is maintained going forward.

Representative Walker Thomas notes the additinal funding comes to the districts as a doubling of per-pupil SEEK funding, which will be especially beneficial to districts that already have full-day kindergarten.

Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke supported overturning a veto on the school choice bill that allows students to attend public schools outside of their county and allows families in Kentucky’s largest counties to use tax credits to help pay tuition to private schools.

Dossett says he heard from school system officials who opposed the measure, but also heard from families who wanted the options.
