Eddyville woman charged with 16 counts of cruelty to animals

An Eddyville woman is facing 16 charges of animal cruelty following an investigation by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a news release, the investigation revealed three deceased horses and 13 malnourished horses at a location in southern Lyon County approximately 10 miles south of Eddyville. Two neglected dogs were also removed from the property. A veterinarian called to the residence and determined the living horses were in very poor condition. Investigation determined that the owner had been out of state for several weeks, and had allegedly left the care of the animals to a young adult who was unable to provide the care needed.

Evidence obtained indicated the owner was aware of the death of the horses but prohibited the young adult from summoning help to bury them for fear of being prosecuted for animal cruelty or neglect. The animals have since been removed the property and taken to an animal rescue facility, where they will stay during the course of the investigation.

An arrest warrant for 16 counts of second-degree cruelty to animals was served against 50-year old Sarah Kelly of Eddyville.
