Hopkinsville man facing multiple charges following pursuit in Madisonville

A Hopkinsville man is facing numerous charges, including wanton endangerment of a police officer and trafficking in methamphetamine, following an incident in Madisonville Thursday.

According to a news release from the Madisonville-Hopkins County Narcotics Unit, officers attempted to stop a vehicle that allegedly had expired plates and had reckless driving patterns. Instead of stopping, the vehicle reported began to flee, going through the Pennyrile Park Apartments’ parking lot before coming to a stop in the lot.  When officers approached, the driver reportedly put the vehicle in reverse, ramming a police cruiser and nearly striking an officer.

The pursuit continued until the vehicle failed, with the driver, identified as 30-year old Nigel Sanders of Hopkinsville, fleeing on foot.  Sanders was eventually taken into custody, and a search of his person reportedly revealed a loaded handgun in his possession.

Search of a backpack that Sanders had tossed during the pursuit allegedly discovered around 370 grams of meth, 40 grams of cocaine, synthetic drugs, marijuana, ecstasy and a large amount of U.S. currency.

He was arrested and charged with trafficking in meth, trafficking in cocaine, trafficking in a controlled substance, trafficking in synthetic drugs, first-degree wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, both vehicle and on foot, tampering with physical evidence, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and more.
