Kentucky’s 2020 unemployment rate was up sharply from 2019 due to COVID shutdowns

Kentucky’s unemployment rate last year, heavily impacted by coronavirus shutdowns, was up sharply from 2019.

Kentucky’s annual unemployment rate for 2020 was 6.6 percent, up from 4.1% in 2019, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics.

The number of unemployed Kentuckians for 2020 was 134,242, up 48,572 from the 85,670 unemployed in 2019. There were 78,479 fewer individuals unemployed in 2020 than 10 years ago.

The U.S. annual unemployment rate jumped to 8.1 percent in 2020 from 3.7 percent in 2019.
