School board approves graduation date, Virtual Learning Academy plan

The Christian County School Board Thursday night approved the graduation date for this school year, and approved the Virtual Learning Academy plan for the upcoming school year.

The date was set for Friday, May 21 with both high schools set to have ceremonies in-person—Christian County High School’s graduation would take place at 5 p.m. and Hopkinsville High School’s set for 8:30 p.m. That could change, with Superintendent Chris Bentzel saying discussions are still underway about what those graduations will look like to follow health and safety guidelines, with details to be announced soon.

The board also approved the Virtual Learning Academy plan for the 2021-2022 school year, with some changes set to take place between now and the start of that school year. VLA Principal Arnelle Wesley says once they move beyond the pandemic model that it began as, they are ready for VLA to take it’s own shape for the future. Some of those changes include the virtual school day taking place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and a list of acceptance criteria.

Students who are currently enrolled and would like to stay in the VLA for the next school year will need to reapply to enroll—open enrollment will take place in the month of March, with acceptance notifications going out on April 15.

There will be an enrollment cap in 2021-2022, with VLA serving students in grades 4 though 12, with a student capacity of 600–150 in grades 4 through 6, 150 in grades 7 through 8 and 300 in grades 9 through 12. Superintendent Chris Bentzel says if the need is there, they can come back to the board and request an increase to the student amount. More information about the enrollment period and specific requirements will be released in the coming days.
