Winter Storm Warning continues, heavy snow expected during afternoon, evening

The Winter Storm Warning continues until 6 a.m. Tuesday for all of western Kentucky and traveling will be difficult to impossible for several hours.

Six to 12 inches of snow is expected across the region—though the southern Pennyrile could be closer to the six if enough sleet mixes in with heavy snow. Near blizzard conditions are expected at times during the afternoon and evening hours with blowing snow and possible drifting.

Most roads are already covered in an inch or two of snow from the overnight event.

Hopkinsville Police Sgt. Rico Rodriguez says road crews are doing the best they can, but anyone who can stay at home should do so.

Governor Andy Beshear says slow down and use abundant caution if you must get out and the National Guard is ready to deploy anywhere in the state if the need arises.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray says crews have been out since last week’s winter storm and they focus first on clearing interstates and parkways.

Like Sgt. Rodriguez, Secretary Gray says the best thing you can do to help your fellow Kentuckians is to stay off the roads.

Bitter cold also remains settled in the region and makes the salt and brine solution used on roadways less effective.

Kentucky Emergency Management Director Michael Dossett says they are also still watching a winter storm later in the week, which could bring several inches of snow, but hopefully less than this event.
