Ky. gains 1,880 new COVID-19 cases, 35 deaths

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear reported 1,880 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, in his last live update of the week.

That once again shows a decrease in new cases, especially in comparison to prior weeks, and the positivity rate is now at 7.08 percent, the lowest it has been in months.

Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack says outreach continues across the state to get vaccine information and assistance into the communities, particularly communities that may be extra hesitant to get the shot, or who may even go over looked.  He says they are dedicated to making sure this vaccine gets to everyone, equally.

Double-masking is starting to become more prevalent, with the CDC saying the measure could protect someone more thoroughly than just the one mask.  Dr. Stack says double-masking can create a better seal around the mouth and nose, and create more barriers for the virus to get through—though masking is not a substitute for social distancing.

He says at this point, vaccinated individuals should continue social distancing, mask wearing while in public and keep up frequent and thorough hand washing, at least until a significant number of people receive the vaccine as will.

There were 36 new deaths reported Thursday, putting the overall death toll in Kentucky at 4,210.

The governor announced the Healthy at Home Eviction Relief Fund, which can be applied for by going online to TeamKyHHERF.ky.gov. to help those who are struggling to pay rent or utility bills.

The Tennessee Department of Health is reporting 1,624 cases of COVID-19 there, along with 81 new deaths, putting the death toll in the Volunteer State at 10,812.
