Local legislators won’t support legalizing historical horse racing

Legislation passed a Senate committee Thursday that would formally legalize historical horse racing machines at Kentucky horse tracks, but its ultimate fate is uncertain and local legislators are not eager to support it.

State Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville believes legalizing the slot-like machines would require a constitutional amendment instead of simple legislation.

Senator Whitney Westerfield opposes any form of new legalized gambling in Kentucky, believing it preys on those who can afford it the least, and agrees it takes a constitutional amendment to legalize the historical racing machines.

Representative Myron Dossett won’t support any form of new gaming and instead believes the General Assembly should approve tax reform to attract new businesses that would generate revenue.
