University of Kentucky women’s basketball coach Matthew Mitchell announced his sudden retirement last night. Mitchell said in a statement he knew the timing wasn’t the best, but he said with all that he’s dealt with in the off-season after suffering a concussion back in March and eventual brain surgery, that his priorities toward his family and faith grew larger than before.

The 49-yer-old Mitchell is Kentucky’s winningest women’s coach with a record of 303-133 in 13 seasons. Kyra Elzy will take over the program and be introduced in a news conference today.
