Kentucky House to be 75 percent Republican in 2020; 30 of 38 Senators are GOP

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday morning joined Kentucky House Speaker David Osborne and state Senate President David Osborne to discuss the state of the Republican Party in the Commonwealth.

Leader McConnell noted the large gains in the state legislature among Republicans and that while he was one of about two dozen Republican judge-executives when he led Jefferson County in the 80’s before being elected to the Senate, there are now 75.

Speaker Osborne says Republicans will make up the 75 percent of the House when the 2021 begins—the largest majority for either party in 35 years.

The Senate will be made up of 30 Republicans and eight Democrats and President Stivers believes the election should send a message to Governor Andy Beshear to engage with the legislature when making decisions about pandemic measures.

Leader McConnell chose not to speculate what 2021 will look like for him, noting two runoff elections in Georgia will determine which party controls the Senate.

The General Assembly will have to pass a one-year budget in 2021 after doing a single year spending plan this year due to uncertainty with the pandemic.
