Ward 1 City Council candidates featured in League forum

The two candidates running for Hopkinsville City Council in Ward 1 recently debated at the League of Women Voters political forums.

Incumbent Councilman Rev. Dr. Darvin Adams is facing Republican Natasha Francis. Adams says he’s been a leader in attempting to make change in his ward and Francis discussed her role as a mother and grandmother and experience in business and industrial work.

Regarding a potential city mandate for crowd sizes, facial coverings and social distancing—Adams says he hopes the council can inspire residents to take common sense measures to protect themselves and others.

Francis stopped short of supporting a mandate, but believes masks and social distancing are crucial to protect lives.

Francis says she needs to study non-partisan elections before deciding if she’d support an ordinance to leave the current way of electing council members. Adams says he opposed the ordinance last time it came up for a vote because it he doesn’t believe the change has the best interest of all citizens in mind.
