League of Women Voters debates begin this week

While the focus of the country Tuesday will be on presidential debate, the Hopkinsville-Christian County League of Women Voters will host their own forums this week for local candidates.

They begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday with candidates for mayor—Democrat Wendell Lynch and Republican J.R. Knight.

That will be followed by the city council races in wards 1, 2 4 and 3 before the candidates for state representative in District 8—Republican Walker Thomas and Democrat Pam Dossett—debate at 3:45.

The evening concludes with four more debates featuring candidates for Hopkinsville City Council in wards 5, 6, 7 and 11.

Day 2 of the forums will begin Thursday afternoon at 4 with the candidates for Christian County School Board in District 1—Jeff Moore and John Bruce. They will be followed at 4:45 with the candidates in District 2—Tiffany Mumford Brame and Nichole Eastman.

The evening will conclude with candidates seeking Hopkinsville City Council seats in wards 12, 10 and 8.

All of the forums this week will be featured live on City TV Channel 376 on Spectrum, on the City TV website and on Facebook Live. At least one debate will also be featured each Sunday morning at 9 on Lite Rock 98.7 and online at lite987whop.com through election weekend.

No in-person crowds will be permitted at the debates in Hopkinsville.

On Thursday October 8, League members will moderate a debate for the 14 Candidates for Oak Grove City Council.  It will be held at the community center in Oak Grove.  The current six Council members will participate in a forum at six, followed at 7:30 by the eight new candidates.

Organizers say CDC guidelines to prevent spread of COVID-19 will be followed.
