NCAA: No plans to expand basketball tourney field

One day after coaches in the Atlantic Coast Conference suggested all NCAA Division One schools be allowed to play in the NCAA Tournament, the NCAA said today it was not considering a “contingency plan” to expand the tournament from its current 68 team format.

NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt tells ESPN the NCAA intends to keep its event in March and April while offering leagues flexibility in selecting automatic qualifiers for the tournament. Gavitt added the NCAA has explored the idea of using replacement teams to continue the tournament if a team is eliminated due to a positive COVID-19 test.
