Todd Co. public health director gives local COVID-19 update

Todd County Public Health Director Jen Harris gave an update on the pandemic in her community Saturday.

Governor Andy Beshear announced Todd County as being in the “red” for how quick COVID-19 is spreading there earlier in the week, but Harris says that was caused by a “data drop” of 46 cases over the period of a couple weeks being dropped into the state system on one day.

Harris says she’s had to explain the situation many times, including to athletic directors of high schools concerned about bringing their teams to Elkton.

Todd County announced its eighth COVID death Friday and Harris says that is a big number for a small county like Todd. She says five of the victims were in a congregate setting, three were in the community at-large and all eight would still be alive today had it not been for contracting the virus.

Haris believes the Christian County Public School System was making the best decision possible with the information they had when the school board decided to reopen to in-person instruction in the coming week. She doesn’t expect the pandemic to let up in the near future in Todd County, but believes there’s a way to reopen Todd schools to in-person instruction with health guidelines in place, knowing there will be some cases.

Harris praised Hearthstone Place Long Term Care for their efforts during the pandemic and directed citizens to videos on the facility’s Facebook page showing residents transitioning back into general population after beating the virus.

There have been 163 total cases in Todd County, 38 are healing at home, 116 have recovered, one is hospitalized and there have been eight deaths.
