Ky. Derby takes place Saturday/Ky. Oaks wrap

Tiz the Law is a near historic favorite to win the Kentucky Derby at odds of 3-5 entering the race today. Tiz won the Belmont Stakes, but has drawn the 17th starting post, a position from which no horse has ever won the Derby. Finnick the Fierce, the only colt to beat Tiz, was scratched Friday with a foot issue, leaving 16 horses in the field. The race normally attracts 150-thousand spectators, but Churchill Downs will be empty for the 146th Run for the Roses.

Merely contending on the big stage wasn’t good enough for Shedaresthedevil, who went on to hammer her name into racing history. The 15-1 long shot won the Kentucky Oaks in record time, overtaking favorite Gamine at the top of the stretch and holding off Swiss Skydiver for a 1 1/2-length victory Friday in the 146th Kentucky Oaks for fillies at Churchill Downs.
