Todd Schools going virtual through fall break, HCA starting with NTI, UHA and SPP considering options

Todd County schools will use virtual instruction to begin the school year lasting until October 2, Heritage Christian Academy will now open next week with non-traditional instruction,  and University Heights Academy and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School are looking at their options.

At a board meeting Monday night, Todd County Superintendent Mark Thomas recommended the district follow the governor’s recommendation to begin the school year virtually and to continue online until the Monday after fall break on October 12.

The board gave approval, though members voiced concern about being sure the virtual learning program works as efficiently and effectively as possible—noting many families lack access to a high speed online connection.

Board members approved a program to allow families without high speed internet access at home to rent a T-Mobile hot spot at a $20 monthly or $200 annual fee.

The hot spots won’t work everywhere in Todd County, but could be helpful for many families.

Tuesday had been set as the first day of school at Heritage and it was going to be in person instruction. Instead, the first day was postponed until August 18 and it will begin with non-traditional instruction.

Meanwhile, UHA Headmaster Beth Unfried sent an email to parents Monday afternoon saying the school board and leadership team is evaluating the situation and will inform families of their plan as soon as possible. An open house that was scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed.

Officials at Sts. Peter and Paul say the principals in the Diocese of Owensboro will meet this week and determine if they need to make changes to the school calendar. The school promises to let families know as soon as any decisions are made.
