Democrat Amy McGrath will face U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in November.
The Associated Press called the Democratic primary for McGrath in a close race with state Representative Charles Booker of Louisville.
Booker won Jefferson, Fayette and Christian Counties, but failed to do as well in more rural areas.
