SWKEDC discusses budget, impact of pandemic

The South Western Kentucky Economic Development Council Board of Directors met virtually Monday afternoon and heard an update on both the budget and on the impact of COVID-19.

Executive Director Carter Hendricks discussed the 2020-2021 budget, which is roughly $550,000, and says it’s very similar to the one that was presented at last month’s meeting. He says there were some changes in the salaries and marketing lines, and they do have a temporary hiring freeze on a third position.

Board Chair Lee Conrad recommended waiting to pass the budget until June’s meeting, just to see what the world looks like at that time.

Hendricks also gave an update on what the council has been able to accomplish amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that has absolutely made things more difficult.  He says they continue to advocate for the construction of a spec building and the construction of an industrial connector at Pembroke Road near the industrial parks to KY 115 near I-24.

Industries have been impacted as well and unemployment for March was seven percent in Christian County, 5.3 percent in Todd County and 6.6 percent in Trigg, but Hendricks says it’s probably more severe than that.

The budget can be approved at the June meeting, following second reading.  They will also discuss what potential future fundraising might be, based on impacts to local businesses and agencies from restrictions and mandated closures.
