Gov. Beshear urging churches to be cautious about reopening

Churches can now reopen to in-person services with social distancing measures in place following decisions by federal judges, but Governor Andy Beshear is urging them to first have a plan in place to protect their parishioners.

The governor’s office issued an order Saturday formally removing churches from the ban on mass gatherings, but Gov. Beshear says houses of worship should postpone reopening until they have all of the procedures in place to protect folks as much as possible from contracting COVID-19.

He urged Kentuckians to not pressure their church leaders to open too soon and hopes churches will continue with virtual services to serve the most vulnerable who will remain at home.

The governor thanked almost every church in Kentucky that has complied with the order against mass gatherings.

Kentucky had 158 new COVID-19 cases from Friday to Saturday, making the total 2,308. Six more Kentuckians died, including four Graves County residents. At least 2,308 coronavirus patients have recovered.

Tennessee has 14,768 total cases and 242 deaths. Montgomery County jumped 11 cases to 172 Saturday, Robertson County gained 12 to 219 and Stewart County remains at seven.
