Kentucky had its highest single-day number of new COVID-19 cases Tuesday and over 300 were from the Green River Correctional Complex in Muhlenberg County.
Governor Andy Beshear says over 1,000 people who are connected to the prison in some way were tested and 309 individuals tested positive.
Many of those individuals are asymptomatic, according to the governor.
The overall total number of new cases was 625 and while that’s by far the highest since the pandemic began, the governor says he believes the data will still show Kentucky has plateaued when much lower totals from recent days are averaged in.
Fourteen more Kentuckians died, including a 35-year old man in Jefferson County. Kentucky has had 5,822 total cases and 275 total deaths.
Governor Andy Beshear says more specific guidance will be released soon for retail and churches as they prepare to reopen May 20 and he hopes to announce the Phase 2 plans to reopen the economy next week.
About 600,000 unemployment claims have been filed in Kentucky during the pandemic and officials say they are working to get through the backlog still and are making progress—with those awaiting payment urged to keep an eye on their email accounts in the coming days.
Tennessee now has 13,624 cases and 226 total deaths. Montgomery County gained two cases to 151, Robertson County is up one to 184 and Stewart County remains at eight cases.
