Kentuckians able to vote by mail for primary election

Kentuckians will now be able to vote by mail in the June primary election, after Secretary of State Michael Adams and Governor Andy Beshear reached an agreement on circumstances caused by COVID-19.

The primary election was already moved to June 23rd due to the pandemic, and now registered voters will be able to mail in their votes.  The move was recommended by Secretary Adams and Governor Beshear has signed an executive order stating the State Board of Elections shall create a secure online portal that will allow voters to request an absentee ballot be sent to them.  The board will also send postcards through the mail to registered voters informing them of the ability.

The Governor said the State Board of Elections will also be working on a plan to safely conduct limited in-person voting and a possible drive-through voting option, so that those voters who cannot vote by mail can exercise their right to vote. It would allow people to do in-person absentee voting by appointment starting on June 8, with polling places to follow strict social distancing and health guidelines.

Secretary Adams says, “Voters across the political spectrum will be pleased with this plan to protect both democracy and public health. I’m grateful to Governor Beshear for his leadership, and his working in good faith with me toward ensuring a successful and safe election.”
