Hopkins Co. has 17th COVID-19 death, group gives $30k for PPE

Another resident of Hopkins County has died from COVID-19 and a local organization there has donated a significant amount of money to help first responders and healthcare workers stay safe.

Judge-Executive Jack Whitfield announced the county’s 17th death during the Wednesday morning briefing. Hopkins County has four new cases, bringing the total to 161. Sixty-two patients have recovered from the virus.

Bill Rudd from the Patrick Rudd Project presented a $30,000 check to local officials in Hopkins County to assist with purchasing personal protective equipment for first responders and health care workers.

Dr. Wayne Lipson of Baptist Health Hospital says that facility has new testing available that determines quickly if the patient has coronavirus. Knowing the result sooner can save some of the most crucial PPE if the patient is negative and can allow officials to begin notifying contacts sooner if the patient’s positive.

Anyone can now be tested at the testing site at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School and pre-registration is no longer required. It is open until 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 until 5:30 Thursday.
