Gov. Beshear gives Sunday afternoon update

Kentucky is managing to flatten the curve on growth of new COVID-19 cases nearly as well as any state in the country and the number of people being tested could increase sharply in the coming days.

Kentucky had 38 new cases from Saturday to Sunday, bringing the overall total to 955. Governor Andy Beshear says it’s good that Kentucky has not been taking large jumps in new cases over the last several days, but the much smaller number was at least partly due to less test results coming in on a Sunday.

Even so, he says Kentuckians should be proud that their social distancing, hand washing and avoidance of crowds has helped prevent rapid growth of the virus.

Department for Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Steven Stack says if the people of Kentucky persist in those efforts, they will undoubtedly save lives.

There were five more COVID-19 related deaths to report Sunday, bringing that total to 45. All but one of those patients who died had other underlying medical issues, according to the governor.

Christian County had no new positive tests returned from Saturday to Sunday and has 41 total cases. Ten people have recovered and 31 cases are active, according to the Christian County Health Department.

The governor says 80 people have been tested in recent days at River’s Bend nursing home in Lyon County. Two patients and two staff members there recently tested positive and Judge-Executive Wade White reported Saturday night that one elderly female patient died.

Governor Beshear announced Gravity Diagnostics of Northern Kentucky will soon be providing another 2,000 tests per day to be used across Kentucky and that will help a great deal, if enough swabs to perform those tests can be acquired.

Tennessee is up to 3,633 cases, including 51 in Montgomery, 59 in Robertson and two in Stewart counties. Forty-four Tennesseans have died from coronavirus, including a Montgomery County resident over the weekend.
