More donations needed, WKRBC thanks community

The Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center says thanks to generous donations from citizens, they’ve been able to keep up with demand but says just a few more donations will help them reach their goal.

According to a news release, WKRBC is the sole blood supplier to 6 western Kentucky Hospitals and 3 Air Ambulances and thanks to donations, they were able to keep them in supply.  Current stock of blood unit sits at 215, but the required number for adequate stock is 245—if 30 more people were able to donate, it would help the center provide for those who need it for treatment of medical emergencies.

Measures are being taken at the center to maintain good social distancing in the face of COVID-19 while getting vital donations. If you are sick or feel sick, stay home—that hasn’t changed since before coronavirus reared its head.  But if you’re feeling well and are able, donate blood so those who depend on it, including cancer patients or those who are badly injured, can have it.

Donors must be at least 17 years old—16 year olds can give with parental permission—weigh at least 115 pounds and wait 56 days between donations.

Medications must be checked with staff before donating. All donors must show a photo ID and are advised to eat well before and after giving.
