CCSO warns about increasing scams during COVID-19

As the country braces itself for continued COVID-19 news and issues, the Christian County Sheriff’s Department is warning people about scams that are trying to take advantage of the pandemic.

Public Information Officer Chris Miller appeared on the Early Bird Show Monday and says that it’s mostly business as usual at the sheriff’s department because unfortunately, crime never stops.  He says that means scammers are also business as usual, and one of the newer ones is when a scammer pretends to be with the government trying to send you a stimulus check and get your personal information.

He says no government agency will ever ask you for personal information over the phone and if you’re even remotely suspicious, hang up the phone.

Deputy Miller says other scams remain just as popular, including scammers who pose as members of the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and threaten people with arrest if they don’t pay via gift cards over the phone. Miller says don’t be tricked by fear and urgency—and if you experience something you think is a scam, contact the department and let them know about it.
